🆕 New Rule — April 2024
No Age Limit to Buy Mediclaim

💰 2025 Senior Protection

✅ Senior Checklist — Before Signing Any Mediclaim Policy
📄 Policy Features to Check
Sum Insured: Minimum ₹10 lakh for a senior in metro India. ₹5 lakh is insufficient for organ surgery.
Room Rent Sub-limit: Ask — "Is there a daily room rent cap?" Avoid policies capping at 1% of sum insured per day.
Co-pay Clause: Does the policy ask you to pay 10–30% of every bill? Zero co-pay is better for seniors.
PED Waiting Period: Is it 3 years? Any policy quoting 4 years is not following the new IRDAI norm.
No-Claim Bonus: Does your sum insured increase if no claim is made? Ask for this in writing.
AYUSH Coverage: Confirm Ayurveda and Yoga treatment included up to full sum insured — no sub-limit.
Domiciliary / Home Care: Is home-based treatment (dialysis, wound care) covered on doctor's certificate?
🏥 Hospital Network
Nearest Network Hospital: Confirm at least 2–3 cashless hospitals within 5 km of your home are in the network list.
Nephrology / Cardiology: Check if your preferred specialist hospital is on the approved network list.
Government Hospital: Confirm if government hospital is also a cashless empanelled facility.
📊 Insurer Quality Check
Claim Settlement Ratio (CSR): Ask the agent: "What is your CSR?" Accept only 95%+ from IRDAI annual report.
Incurred Claim Ratio: Between 70–90% is healthy. Too low means claims are being rejected frequently.
TPA or In-House Claims: In-house claims processing (no TPA) is faster and more accountable. Ask clearly.
💬 Questions to Ask Agent — Do Not Skip
"What is NOT covered in this policy?" — Ask for exclusions list in writing.
"Are consumables like stents, implants, PPE kits covered or excluded?"
"Is there a senior citizen helpline I can call — not just the general number?"
"If my cashless is denied at hospital, what is the exact escalation number?"
"Is there a co-pay, and does it apply to all claims or only specific ones?"

🧓 KK Seth's Note for Fellow Seniors
After retirement, I spent 7 years learning what our healthcare system truly offers — and where it fails us. Mediclaim in India has improved significantly under IRDAI's 2024–2026 norms, but the gap between what a policy says and what a senior actually receives at the time of a surgery is still large. The most important things: read every exclusion before you sign, keep all your documents in one physical folder, save the helpline number in your phone, and never accept a claim rejection as final — the ombudsman is free and works.
