Stroke Watch: A Wristband That Could Catch In-Hospital Strokes Faster, and the Top Causes of Stroke
Most of us think of stroke as something that happens at home. But strokes also happen to patients already in hospital, often after surgery or heart procedures, and they are frequently found late. A new wearable aims to change that. Below it, the causes of stroke every Indian family should know.
The news: Neuralert wristband
Neuralert is a pair of lightweight, non-invasive wristbands developed at the University of Pennsylvania by neurologist Steven Messe and engineer James Weimer. The bands track arm movement around the clock and watch for asymmetry, meaning one arm moving or weakening differently from the other. Arm weakness on one side is a classic stroke sign.
This matters because a patient who is sedated, asleep or recovering in bed cannot easily show the usual warning signs, and nurses can only check so often. When the system detects a worrying pattern, it sends an alert to hospital staff on their mobile devices so treatment can start sooner.
Constant watch
Monitors 24 hours a day instead of periodic manual neurological checks.
Instant alert
Cloud software notifies clinical staff on their phones when stroke signs appear.
Speed claim
The company says detection could drop from around five hours to about 15 minutes.
Regulatory status
FDA Breakthrough Device designation (2021). Named among TIME Best Inventions of 2022.
Evidence check
The speed figures come from the developers and the university, not from a finished independent trial. A Penn study to validate the algorithm had enrolled more than 300 hospitalized patients at last report. Breakthrough designation speeds up review but is not the same as full approval. Treat this as promising technology still being proven.

Top causes of stroke
About 8 in 10 strokes are ischemic, caused by a blocked blood vessel in the brain. The rest are haemorrhagic, caused by a vessel that bursts. The causes below overlap, and most of them are silent until the day they are not.
| Cause or risk factor | How it leads to stroke | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| High blood pressure | The single biggest modifiable cause. Strains and damages brain vessels, so they narrow, clog or burst. | Check regularly at home, take medicines on schedule, cut salt, ask your doctor for your target. |
| Atrial fibrillation | Irregular heartbeat lets clots form in the heart and travel to the brain. | Ask for a pulse and ECG check. Blood thinners, if prescribed, sharply cut risk. |
| Diabetes | High sugar damages blood vessels and speeds up artery narrowing. | Keep HbA1c in your doctor agreed range, walk daily, watch sweets and refined carbs. |
| High cholesterol and clogged arteries | Plaque builds up in neck (carotid) and brain arteries and can block flow. | Lipid profile yearly, statins if advised, more fibre and less fried food. |
| Smoking and tobacco chewing | Thickens blood, damages vessel walls and raises blood pressure. | Quit all forms of tobacco. Risk begins to fall after quitting. |
| Obesity and inactivity | Drive up blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol together. | Gentle daily walking and strength work, steady weight control. |
| Heavy alcohol | Raises blood pressure and triggers rhythm problems. | Limit or avoid. Binge drinking is especially risky. |
| Heart disease and sleep apnoea | Weak heart valves, past heart attack and untreated loud snoring with breathing pauses raise stroke odds. | Follow up with your cardiologist. Get a sleep study if you snore heavily and feel tired. |
| Age, family history and past mini-stroke (TIA) | Cannot be changed, but a TIA is a loud warning that a major stroke may follow. | Treat any TIA as an emergency and complete all recommended tests. |
Know the signs: BE-FAST
Note the exact time symptoms began. Clot-dissolving treatment works only within a limited window, so do not wait for symptoms to pass and do not drive yourself.
Guidance for NRI families
If your parents live in India while you live abroad, put a validated home blood pressure monitor in their house and ask for a weekly reading by video call. Save the nearest stroke-ready hospital and the 108 and 112 numbers on their phone and on the fridge. Keep a one-page medicine list and ABHA health ID details with a trusted neighbour or relative. Confirm that their Mediclaim policy covers emergency admission and neurological care.
India context
Salt-heavy diets, uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes, tobacco chewing and air pollution all add to stroke risk in India. Many patients reach hospital late. Government programmes such as Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY may help eligible families with hospital costs, so ask the hospital help desk about coverage at admission.
Frequently asked questions
What is the number one cause of stroke?
High blood pressure is the biggest modifiable risk factor. Over the years it damages and narrows brain blood vessels or makes them burst.
Can a stroke happen without warning?
Yes. Silent causes such as high blood pressure, atrial fibrillation and high blood sugar often give no symptoms until a stroke occurs, which is why regular checks matter.
What should I do if I suspect a stroke in India?
Call 108 or 112 immediately, note the time symptoms started, and go to the nearest hospital with stroke care. Do not wait to see if symptoms pass.
Is the Neuralert wristband available in hospitals now?
It has FDA Breakthrough Device designation and is being validated in a hospital study. It is not yet a routine hospital standard.
Check your numbers this week
Blood pressure, blood sugar and pulse. Three simple checks can prevent the most common causes of stroke.
