What Is Triphala?
The Sanskrit word Triphala (त्रिफला) literally means "three fruits." It is one of the most celebrated polyherbal formulas in Ayurvedic medicine — mentioned in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridayam, the three pillars of classical Ayurvedic literature.
Unlike most herbal remedies that address one or two doshas, Triphala is rare in that it harmonises all three — Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. This is why it is described as a Tridosha Nashak Amrit (त्रिदोष नाशक अमृत) — a nectar that destroys imbalance in all three energies of the body.
"त्रिफला सर्वरोगघ्नी" — Triphala is the destroyer of all diseases.
— Charaka Samhita, Classical Ayurvedic Text (c. 600 BCE)Each of the three fruits is a renowned Ayurvedic medicine in its own right. But when combined in balanced proportion — traditionally equal parts by weight — their combined effect is far greater than the sum of their individual actions. This is the principle of Yogavahi: synergistic amplification.

- Strengthening Agni (
